Beauty tip! Oily skin? Try this mattifying sunscreen with SPF 50+ when in the sun

If you’re an oily girl like me, you understand that sun, sweat and oily skin don’t mesh. It’s horrible, to say the least. Because my skin gets really oily (and not just my t-zone), I tend to rely on a primer to keep my face somewhat matte throughout the day, even if I’m not wearing any face makeup. Completely matte it never stays, but applying a primer on my face in the morning does help. In the Summer, however, when it’s hot out, even a primer can’t save my face. I sweat (upper lip sweat…gross!) and, to make it even...

Foods to avoid when you want beautiful skin (sadly!)

Some of us are naturally blessed with normal, healthy skin while some are unfortunately not. I am not. I have very oily, acne-prone skin that is very sensitive. In my quest to get that ‘perfect skin’, I’ve read a lot of articles that tell you which foods to eat to improve your skin. These articles don’t always get into which food to avoid. I personally find it a lot more helpful to know which food to avoid, in stead of giving me a list of what I’m ‘allowed’ to eat. I thought you guys would be interested in this as...

5 Tips to save money on makeup and skin care

A lot of the products (makeup, skin care) I review here on my blog aren’t cheap. Some are, but a lot aren’t. There’s not much I can do about it really. Some times quality does cost more money and with a lot of products I definitely find that ‘a little bit goes a long way’. However, I do try to save as much money as I can on makeup. Below is how! The most expensive product in my makeup routine: my Hourglass Immaculate foundation ($55). 1) I cut open skin care tubes to get all the product I might be...

How I remove my makeup at night

Putting on makeup on is fun, but removing it at the end of a long day is even more enjoyable! 😀 Everyone has their own preferred way of removing their makeup. I’ve tried a bunch of ways, but I always start with a good makeup wipe. My all time favorite makeup wipes are ones that a friend gifted me once, they are the Cleansing Water Cloths by Japanese brand Koh Gen Do. They are AMAZING (the ingredient list alone will seriously make you drool!), but unfortunately kind of expensive (review). The wipes I’m using at the moment are the PS....

Long hair…don’t care! How I made my hair grow long

When I wear my hair down (which, honestly, I rarely do these days), I always get questions about how I got my hair to this length. I don’t know why, but apparently there’s this myth that African hair (natural or relaxed), doesn’t grow or grow as quickly as other types of hair. This is not true at all. All hair grows an average of ½ inch (about 1.25 cm) per month, but it’s how you treat your hair that determines how much it will grow. My hair, its texture and its color, is all natural. Right now it reaches the...

Beauty question answered: I’m black, do I HAVE to wear sunscreen?

Time for another Beauty question answered! Today’s topic is sunscreen and whether or not you should wear it if you are of a darker complexion. In short: the answer is YES! Find out why and how below. Mason helping his grandparents in their backyard. He’ll be 22 months in a couple of days 🙂 It’s a misconception that black people don’t need to use sunscreen. A lot of people believe that dark skin has melanin (color) which provides enough protection. This is only partially true. Melanin does provide protection but not enough, about an SPF 15. Ultraviolet rays from...

Gear up for Summer! Here are 3 liquid eyeliners that stay

Summer is almost here! This means that it’s that time to start looking for a good black eyeliner that doesn’t move, smudge or fade! Of course you can skip eyeliner all together when it’s hot, but if you’re like me and obsessed with black eyeliner, a good waterproof liquid liner is a summer essential. Here are my favorite waterproof and sweat-proof picks for creating the best cat eyeliner, despite the heat. 😉 My all-time favorite eyeliner is Urban Decay’s 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in the shade ‘Perversion’ (black). It’s waterproof and super pigmented: it’s really, really black and shiny. It’s...

Things you should NOT do before bedtime

I’ve been having some trouble sleeping lately. Even when I’m really tired (which is most of the time), I can’t seem to fall asleep at a normal time. My toddler wakes me up every morning around 7 and for this reason alone I’d LOVE to sleep before midnight. But most nights I just can’t bring myself to do so. 🙁 Even when I do go to bed on time, I don’t sleep until 1 or 2. This is me, basically: In order to be more energetic, I looked up some things to help me sleep. I decided to share 3...

Beauty Question Answered: Hair brushes, which one do you pick?

Hair brushes are the most commonly used beauty tool ever. Did you know that? However, most people just grab the first one they see at the store. The other day when I talked about my current hair routine, I showed you guys which brush I’m currently using: I use a ‘boar bristle’ paddle hair brush (found here).I’m not that great with hair, but I do know that using the right hair brush can make a big difference in the health of your hair and how it looks. There are tons of different hair brushes (different sizes and shapes) around, which...

Traveling with makeup on an airline (how I pack)

If you caught this post from a couple of days ago, you know that I’ve recently traveled to the Netherlands. I was done with the snow in Kentucky and decided to visit my family in Europe where it’s a little bit warmer. 😉 Now that you’ve probably also seen the contents of my makeup bag (part 2 will follow tomorrow), I thought I would share how I go about packing my makeup. One thing I always try to keep in mind when packing my clothes is to be organized and make things simple. As for my makeup, the greatest tip...

Beauty Question Answered: How do I use a makeup setting spray?

Long-time blog reader and friend Tameeka asks: What exactly is a makeup setting spray and how do I use it? Great question! Apparently I have been mentioning setting sprays on my blog over the years, but I’ve never really explained what they do and I why I use them. In this post, for example, about how I prevent my foundation from looking cakey, I write this: ‘If I’m using a liquid foundation (I mostly use liquid), I love spritzing a bit of setting spray on my brush before applying, because it helps to smooth out the foundation, spread it more...
