My name
Yes, Kizzy is indeed my real name, not a nickname like many people think! My mom first heard of it on the American tv series Roots, that was first aired in ‘78. Ever heard of it? Roots was based on the book by Alex Haley and set in Gambia, West Africa. My mom was so touched by the series, that she decided to name me, her first child after one of the main characters. And for those interested, I was born in the summer of ‘79 and my zodiac sign is Leo.
My roots
I was born in the city of Rotterdam, located in the south west of the Netherlands (about an hour driving from Amsterdam). My parents however are from the island Santo Antao in Cabo Verde, also known as the Cape Verde islands. For those who have never heard of Cabo: it’s a group of islands in the North Atlantic ocean, west of Senegal. In the fifteenth century the islands were uninhabited and that’s when they were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese. The Portuguese took slaves from the mainland of Africa (the West Coast) and that was the start of the Capeverdeans: a racial mix of the Portuguese and the Africans. The official written language to this day is Portuguese. The spoken language is Capeverdean. The most striking thing about the Cape Verde islands, in my opinion, is that the population living outside the islands, is greater than its domestic one. My parents are examples of Cape Verdean who emigrated to a foreign country in the seventies. I am very proud of my heritage!
My professional life
I have a Masters in Art & History (specialized in media and culture) and a Bachelor’s degree in International Communications Management. Graduated from both The Hague University and the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. My last job back in The Netherlands was as a travel manager/executive assistant/office manager at a large international satellite company where I took care of all the international travel arrangements, assisted the senior vice president of marketing & sales and made sure everything in the office ran smoothly.
Fun stuff
Life is good! Since January of ‘10 I’ve been living in the US, together with my husband. We live in the Bay Area in California. My boo and I have been together since ‘04. The first five years in The Netherlands and now in California.
