My Holiday Party Survival Guide: quick tips to look your best!
23 Dec 2015
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Supposedly, right? The holidays are fun, but can also be kinda stressful. Crowded stores, long check-out lines, busy parking lots, having to come up with unforgettable gifts, wrapping everything you bought, cold weather, guests from out-of-town, not enough money…the list goes on and on. 😀
The holidays are also the time when you go to a lot of parties and, of course, want to look your best. I don’t know about you, but whenever I want my makeup to look ‘perfect’, everything goes wrong! I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s because I’m too focused on it or maybe I’m just stressed… Who knows!
Here are some things you can do to avoid messing up your makeup. These tips have helped me, so I thought I should share them here! I’m calling this my Holiday Survival Guide.
Get some rest
Like I said, holidays often bring stress. Pressure to host or attend parties, cooking a meal for a lot of people etc. I myself can get really nervous for things, which causes skin issues (hello, breakouts!) and my psoriasis to flare. So what I try to do now is to rest as much as I can the days before the Holiday season starts. Basically every time I have the opportunity to take a nap or a long bath, I take it! It’s free too!
Exfoliate your face
Cold weather causes your skin to be dry and flakey. That sun-kissed glow you had in the Summer is long gone by now, unfortunately. What I do to get rid of dry patches and to bring life back to my face, is to use an exfoliator before I start applying my skincare and makeup!
What I like to use is the Triple Microdermabrasion Face Polish by Exuviance. You can find it at Ulta Beauty ($72). I seriously swear by it! It’s a very gentle polish, not a rough scrub like the ones you find in drugstores. It’s very easy to use: I massage it for about 30 seconds and leave it on for 2 minutes. Then I rinse my face and continue with the rest of my skin care. Afterwards my face is super smooth, bright and fresh! Truly an instant miracle worker and worth every penny!

Apply a red lipstick or gloss
Nothing brightens up your face more than red lips! It’s cliche, but red lips are perfect for holiday parties, always a hit! Especially if you’re someone who rarely wears bright lip colors. With red lips it doesn’t matter how ‘simple’ the rest of your makeup is, you’ll look festive either way!
My favorite red holiday lippie this year is the shade Like That Love by Makeup Revolution USA, found at Ulta Beauty. It’s what they call an ‘Intense Lip Lacquer’, a liquid lipstick that applies like a gloss but is not sticky. It’s a beautiful red with a little bit of pink in it and the tiniest bit of blue shimmer. And guess what? It’s only $5!
By the way, when going to a holiday party, don’t forget to bring your lippie with you in your purse. You’re probably going to have to touch up throughout the evening, especially after eating or drinking.

Set your makeup
To make your makeup last longer, use a setting spray after you’re done applying your makeup! I’m currently using De-Slick De-Slick Makeup Setting Spray by Urban Decay (Ulta Beauty, $30), which is ALWAYS the final step to my makeup routine.
Spray it on your face and you’re good for the evening! De-slick prevents loss of color, melting, sliding, caking, cracking, excess shine, fading blush, creasing eye shadows etc.. All the stuff that you do not want to happen to your makeup while at a holiday party. Remember: just 2-4 sprays about 10 inches from your face and you’re good to go. 🙂
Hope my little ‘Holiday Party Survival Guide’ is helpful. Remember, don’t let stress or fatigue ruin your holiday look! 🙂
