Foods to avoid when you want beautiful skin (sadly!)

Some of us are naturally blessed with normal, healthy skin while some are unfortunately not. I am not. I have very oily, acne-prone skin that is very sensitive. In my quest to get that ‘perfect skin’, I’ve read a lot of articles that tell you which foods to eat to improve your skin. These articles don’t always get into which food to avoid. I personally find it a lot more helpful to know which food to avoid, in stead of giving me a list of what I’m ‘allowed’ to eat. I thought you guys would be interested in this as well, so I decided to share my findings here with you. Below are the foods to avoid when you want beautiful skin. Warning: it might make you sad!
Basically the rule of thumb is: anything that is processed and not in its natural form is not good for your skin. Processed foods, sugar, wheat, preservatives, red and fatty meat, dairy products, excess salt and excess alcohol are all contributors to premature aging. Yikes!
You probably already knew about processed food not being good for your skin, but did you know that milk and dairy products are a no-no too? Dairy can have a horrible impact on skin, especially on oily skin. Dairy products make acne-related issues worse and speed up the aging process. So try not to drink/eat as much dairy. And if you’re worried about not getting enough calcium (that is found in dairy), eat green leafy vegetables instead.
Added sugars have a high glycemic index and can be harmful to your skin. The glycemic index measures how rapidly different foods make your blood sugar rise. Added sugars such as honey, cane sugar and corn syrup trigger hormone and blood sugar levels that lead to excess oil production. Oily skin looks bad AND it leads to a high risk of acne. So yeah, try to stay away from food and beverages that use added sugars, even of that added sugar is honey!
Red and fatty meat like lamb, pork, ham and beef are rich in saturated fats. These fats are linked to fat and cholesterol which also have an impact on your skin. Try to limit or reduce the intake of fatty red meat. If you enjoy a nice steak like I do, this is especially sad to know…
Love salty snacks like potato chips, French fries, baked cookies and salty biscuits? You’re in big trouble then! I, myself, am not crazy about cookies and biscuits, but I do love me some French fries and tortilla chips. Unfortunately salty snacks are rich in trans-fats and sodium that damage the health of the skin by causing inflammation. So yes, avoid these too. 🙁
Last but not least: enriched flour. This is when whole grain is stripped off its fiber and nutrient content. Enriched cereals, breads, baked foods and pasta are sadly rich in enriched flour and lead to excess oil production, acne and anti-aging. Booooo! You should eat whole breads, oats and brown rice instead. I know what you’re thinking… I rather have pasta too!
