Remember my review about the WEN cleansing conditioner? Click here if you missed it. I was sent this product for review purposes a couple of months ago and I liked it… a lot! After that I received a lot of questions and comments. Including from people who were thinking about purchasing or had actually purchased it because I had made them curious with my review!
Because of all the questions, I decided to do a follow up entry going more into the concept of washing your hair with conditioner, in stead of shampoo (and conditioner). A lot of people were asking me if it actually works and how. I tried to answer the questions the best I could. You can find that article here, if you’d missed it.
My friend Nadine was one of those people who had purchased WEN after my review. You might recognize her name from her previous guest blog about the Acne Free 3-step system. Anyway, like I expected, she loved WEN! Two weeks ago she wrote me saying that she had found two (less expensive) alternatives. Because we all want to save a few bucks, I asked her if she could compare the three and write down her findings.
And, I’m sure you’ve already guessed, she was kind enough to do so!

After the rave reviews from Kizzy and being brainwashed by yet another infomercial, I was very excited to try WEN by Chaz Dean. The only thing I was not excited about was the price. It is pretty expensive. I paid $15 for 6 ounces, just to try out. I’d purchased the Lavender cleansing conditioner and I loved it. It smelled great, made my scalp tingly and really lived up to its claims – it was a true all-in-one. The only problem, six ounces goes really fast with the amount they recommend that you should use for your hair length, and my hair is long.
I’d read on naturallycurly.com about a product with similar claims to be a cleansing conditioner for a fraction of the price. So I went to Sally Beauty Supply, the exclusive retailer of this product, Hair One Cleansing Conditioner. I bought the formula for color-treated hair for about $8 and was really excited to try it out as soon as I got home!
I wanted to like this, I really did. For half the price, I wanted to love it, but I just didn’t…...
Comparing the ingredients, I noticed similarities and differences. The major difference in this was that there were far less natural extracts than WEN had. This product smelled good and was easy to use, but it just didn’t work for my hair. It somehow dried out my hair. I don’t know how a product that claims to be a cleansing conditioner dried out my hair more than it was, but that’s exactly what happened to me. My theory is that it contained too much alcohol (cetyl alcohol was one of the first ingredients listed whereas the first ingredients in WEN were all botanical extracts).
The same day I bought Hair One, I also saw in the Harmon section of Bed, Bath & Beyond another brand of cleansing conditioner for a great price (about $12)! Of course I bought it and decided to try it when I was done trying out Hair One. I’ve been using Lisa Rachel Conditioner & Cleanser (for curly hair, with Argan Oil) for about a week now and I love it. My hair is not dried out, my drying time is shorter and it just feels very nice and soft. I’ll definitely be picking up another bottle when this is done. (I couldn’t find it on the Harmon website so here (click) is a link to what I bought.
