Back in August I had the honor to write about my Five Favorite Things on my friend D.’s (aka FreshDimez) site. If you hadn’t checked it out back then, you can still do so: you can find the article by clicking here.
It took a few months, but yesterday I finally gathered the courage to ask D. to write something for my site!
In my eyes she’s the Queen of brown girl beauty. Ask her a question about make up or skincare for women of color and she’ll give you a well thought out answer and a superb recommendation that really works! In this guest blog she proves that bronzers aren’t justfor those pigmently challenged! Keep on reading!

When you ask me what my favorite beauty item is besides my beloved mascara and lipgloss, I will without a doubt tell you that it has to be bronzer. I don’t even know how many bronzers I own. But what I do know is that I’m not done collecting them. I just purchased two new ones today by Milani and one by Black Radiance!
My fetish for bronzers started about eight years ago. The very first bronzer I ever bought was a liquid, almost chocolate brown bronzer, by MAC. When I bought it the make-up artist hinted that this bronzer wasn’t a part of the permanent collection. And even though I used this bronzer very sparingly, so that I would not run out of it quickly, I knew the day would come that I had to purchase a new one. F.Y.I.: I was a poor student back then and having make-up backups stocked, like I do now, wasn’t an option…LOL!
Anyway…I started to search everywhere for great and cheap alternatives, and that’s how it all started.
But why bronzers? you might wonder. Well, that all has to do with the tropical climate in my home country, Suriname. Everyone there has that radiant sun kissed glow. And of course naturally achieved by the sun there that shines all year round. So naturally I don’t need a bronzer when I’m on vacation in Suriname. But in the Netherlands where I have been living since I was three years old, it’s a different story. Sometimes even in the summertime it seems like the sun is hiding?!
So a fast, easy and even safe way to achieve that sun kissed bronzy look all year around is to fake it with some bronzer. For daytime I prefer a bronzer with less shimmer, when I go out I don’t mind wearing a shimmery bronzer. I even wear some around my chest, shoulders and arms when I feel like it.
What I like best about bronzers is that they look natural and subtle, while making a big difference in how your skin looks. A silent killer if you ask me!
Some of my favorite bronzers are (for reference: I’m a NW 45 in MAC):
L’Oreal Hip Vibrant Shimmer Bronzing Powder in Radiant

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Brunette

Cover Girl Queen Collection Bronzer in Brown Bronze

Revlon Colorstay Mineral Finishing powder in SunKiss
