If you’re a long-time reader you know that I struggle with my skin. It’s so frikking sensitive! I have super oily skin, I get pimples (ok, one or two at a time, but still…) and I suffer from mild rosacea (redness in my face). Also, my skin tends to burn/sting/itch a lot. But now I have found out the cause of the irritation (or at least what is making it worse):
I’m allergic to mica.
See, I’ve always been allergy prone (I’m allergic to shell fish, nuts, dogs/cats and pollen). After going to the doctor and doing some little experiments at home, I’ve now found out that I’m also allergic to mica. Mica (or sericite, finer version of mica) is often the primary ingredient in (mineral) makeup.
It’s a translucent mineral that helps with adhesion. So basically, mica helps the make up stay on your face. Also, it also reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores by reflecting light.
HOWEVER, mica is made from crushed rock, which tends to have sharp tiny edges causing little ‘tears’ when buffed onto the skin. It can also cause further irritation to women with acne and rosacea (me!) it makes both of these conditions worse.
So yeah, I’m definitely avoiding mica-based products from now on! I’ve already tossed/sold a third of my make up collection! I will never buy make up without reading the ingredients first. nerd face
PS. I’m not saying you should stop using mica as well. Everyone’s skin is unique, but just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s right of every skin type! Keep that in mind.
